Master of Human Resource Management — Program Overview

In today’s highly competitive business environment, the roles and responsibilities of human resource professionals have become increasingly critical to corporate success. Human Resource Management (HRM) professionals must understand human resource issues and management trends in a competitive global economy as well as a broad spectrum of state and federal employment legislation.

The Master of Human Resource Management (MHRM) program is offered in an accelerated executive format for working professionals and is specifically customized to equip human resource managers with the tools necessary to effectively meet the challenges of an ever-changing business climate. In the past, the MHRM program has been offered on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

This 16-month, 30-credit-hour program (ten, 3-credit-hour graduate level courses) is designed to enhance the skills of individuals in the profession as well as those interested in pursuing a career in HRM. The curriculum provides advanced education in organizational behavior and dynamics, staffing, training, compensation, benefits, career development, health and safety, and labor relations. Legal and regulatory requirements in these areas create a need for a firm foundation in employment law, a need that is met through a course dedicated to the topic. Participants will also have the opportunity to choose one human resource elective as a class.

Prospective students are not required to submit a GMAT score or have full-time work experience to apply, however, two years of work experience is preferred. An interview is required.

Learning Goals for the MHRM

• Students will demonstrate a broad understanding of human resource theories and current practices across different types of organizations.
• Students will be able to apply knowledge of major human resource responsibilities at both a strategic and operational level.
• Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of international human resource management issues.
• Students will be able to integrate information technology into the operational areas of human resource management.

Cohort Structure

MRHM students will go through the entire program together as a cohort class. The cohort structure provides an excellent forum for networking and sharing experiences while fostering a collaborative learning environment.

AACSB Accreditation

The Master of Human Resource Management program is offered by the UH Shidler College of Business, the only business program in Hawai’i accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB-International ). AACSB-International is the premier national accrediting agency for schools of business and accounting.

Convenient Class Schedule

After Residence Week, classes are held every Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. and all day on alternating Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The classes are held at the University of Hawaii Shidler College of Business executive classroom complex. On weekday evenings (Oahu only) a light dinner will be offered and lunch will be provided on Saturdays. Refreshments are provided at morning, afternoon, and evening breaks.
