Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER):
University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa

Industry Outreach and Executive Development

The UH CIBER has well-established networks with business and industry organizations in Hawaiʻi that will be leveraged to produce a comprehensive set of programs to help improve the international competitiveness of businesses in Hawaiʻi and throughout the U.S., especially to operate successfully in Asia.

Critical Foreign Languages for Business and Industry Professionals

The UH CIBER will support UH Kapiolani Community College (KCC) to develop an intensive language and culture program to meet the needs of local mid-level managers working in the travel, tourism and transportation security fields.

Technical Workshops for Professionals in Financial Services, Information Technology and Homeland Security

The UH CIBER will work with professional organizations, such as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, the American Society of Military Comptrollers, the Association of Government Accountants and industry groups such as the Hawaiʻi Technology Trade Association and the Hawaiʻi Visitors and Convention Bureau to develop specialized seminars for these industry sectors.

International Trade Seminars and NASBITE Training and Certificate Program

The UH CIBER will partner with the College of Tropical Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Minority Business Development Center, and the State DBEDT to create a series of seminars designed to serve small businesses. We will also explore the opportunity for UH to become a testing site for NASBITE certification to encourage a higher level of sophistication in international trade among Hawaiʻi's small businesses.

National Forum on Trade Policy Co-Sponsorship

The UH CIBER will co-sponsor the National Forum on Trade Policy, an annual event designed to facilitate discussion about current and pending free trade policies among trade specialists from academia and the private and public sectors. This project engages business schools, language and area studies programs with public and private sector organizations to discuss and inform U.S. trade policy.

Doing Business in Islamic Asia Online Training Modules

In June 2005, the UH CIBER co-sponsored a conference with the University Kebangsaan Malaysia on doing business in Islamic Asia. Speakers and panelists provided unique expertise and perspectives on business opportunities and challenges in Islamic markets. To make the insights from this event accessible to faculty, students and businesses throughout the U.S., we will develop a set of multimedia online training modules derived from research papers, videos and speeches from the conference.

International, Interdisciplinary Conference on Muslim Asia: Focus on the Professions

The CIBER has received modest funding from UH Vice Chancellor Gary Ostrander to take the lead in hosting this conference in Honolulu in Fall 2007 or Winter 2008. Efforts are underway to select an appropriate hotel venue, select keynote speakers and panelists and solicit partnerships and co-sponsorships.

Asia Pacific Homeland Security Summit Co-Sponsorship

The UH CIBER will continue to co-sponsor the annual Asia Pacific Homeland Security Summit organized by the Department of Defense. Conference participants address Homeland Security implications for public and private sectors through discussions about government, political, community, and business initiatives to mitigate and develop resiliency to the threat of global terrorism.
