Donald A. Corbin Distinguished Professorship in Accounting
Partners from top accounting firms in Hawai‘i join Donald Corbin (pictured front row center) at the Pacific Club to celebrate reaching the minimum $500,000 toward the first Distinguished Professorship in Accounting. Hawaii’s accounting firms, alumni and the Corbins made contributions to establish the fund.

John and Sue Dean first to fund professorship through Shidler Matching Gift Program
Thanks to the generosity of John and Sue Dean, long time supporters of the College, the John and Sue Dean Distinguished Professorship was established. John Dean, a venture capitalist based in Silicon Valley, earlier established the Shidler College K¯ıpapa lecture series which brings renowned speakers to the college. The Deans are the first to establish an endowment through the Matching Gift Program established by Jay Shidler through his transformational gift to the college. A gift of an endowed professorship at UH M¯anoa’s Shidler College of Business provides critical leadership support to the university and to the future development of the state of Hawai’i. Professorship endowment established to honor parents
The Shidler College of Business is pleased to announce the establishment of the Jitsuo and Sawa Doi Miyawaki Distinguished Professorship endowment. It is named in honor of the donor’s parents (pictured), who arrived in Honolulu as immigrants from Hiroshima, Japan, in 1923. Jitsuo and Sawa Doi Miyawaki instilled in their children that education is a lifetime, ongoing process. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, earned a BA and MA from Temple University School of Pharmacy. They earned an MBA from the UH M¯anoa Shidler College of Business in the 1980’s.

William R. Johnson, Jr. Distinguished Professorships awarded
William R. Johnson, Jr. (BBA ‘65), President of the Johnson Machinery Corporation in California, and his wife, Sylvia Sue, made a $1 million dollar gift to the Shidler College of Business last summer. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, the William R. Johnson, Jr. Distinguished Professorship Endowment and the W. Ruel Johnson Distinguished Professorship Endowment, named after the donor’s father, were recently established. These professorships have been awarded to two outstanding Shidler College of Business faculty members to fund research and education goals. The awardees are: Professor of Marketing Dana Alden (right) and Professor of Information Technology Management Elizabeth Davidson (left).

Shidler Alumni Association Scholarship Fund
The Shidler College Alumni Association pledged $200,000 to establish an endowed scholarship fund this past February. The gift will be matched by the Shidler matching gift program for a total scholarship fund of $400,000. The first installment check for $22,350 was presented by the association to the College at the Executive Vineyards event in March. “This is the largest commitment ever made by the alumni association to the College and will support many College students in perpetuity. Our alumni are essential to the College’s success and I know the students will see this as a real vote of confidence,” said Dean V. Vance Roley.

Alumni At Work

In 2003, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, Inc. initiated an industry-wide program to attract top business students. The result is a truly unique internship experience that exposes students to a full range of opportunities at different insurance companies. Through a rotation schedule, students gain valuable insight into such areas as corporate risk management, insurance agencies, insurance companies, and insurance regulators.
