The Executive MBA admissions applications forms indicate the standards used by the Shidler College to determine admission to the program. Note that admission is not based solely on quantitative criteria such as prior grade-point average (GPA) or TOEFL scores. Rather, the admissions committee looks at the whole person, especially prior work experience and the results of the admissions interview.

The practice of the Shidler College and the University of Hawaii Graduate Division is to make admissions decisions as soon as the complete application has been received by the admissions committee in Hawaii. In the case of the Executive MBA in Vietnam, this takes a little longer than our other programs because of the time required to validate the transcripts of prior academic work and to have the results of the interview and essay transmitted and reviewed.

Upon receipt of the applicant’s completed admissions dossier (including all supporting documents as required), the admissions committee may decide as follows:

• Immediate acceptance to the program.
• Rejection of acceptance to the program.
• Deferred acceptance to the program conditional on further review by the admissions committee.

Students must earn a 500 TOEFL (or IELTS equivalent of 5.0) to be eligible for admission to the Executive MBA Vietnam program. In rare cases a TOEFL between 490 and 499 will be considered if the student is very strong on all other criteria: prior grades, work experience, personal interview and essay test. Any student who does not earn above a 600 TOEFL or 7.0 IELTS will be required to take two English courses.

Students who are U.S. citizens are eligible for all financial aid that is available to other University of Hawaii students who are U.S. citizens.

All admitted candidates can be considered for scholarships. Scholarships for 2009-2011 intake are yet to be announced.

Any admitted student who does not earn above a 600 TOEFL (or IELTS equivalent of 7.0) will be required to take the two English courses offered by the Executive MBA Vietnam program in cooperation with the University of Hawaii English Language Institute (ELI).

No. Once you have been admitted to the program you do not need to take the TOEFL or IELTS again. If you were admitted but your TOEFL was not 600 or above (IELTS of 7.0 or above) you will be required to take the two ELI courses that form the English bridging program.

ELI course 1 will be offered at the begining of the program.

ELI course 2 (on-line) will be offered in Spring or Summer 2010.

The ELI courses require that the student pay an additional $1,000 tuition payment. These fees are needed to pay for the extra course administrative overhead as well as the instructor, his/her travel, and accommodations.

Regrettably, the University of Hawaii requires that English language training of graduate students be done by the ELI. Hence alternative coursework at other universities or online will not be allowed. The best way to avoid this is to make sure your TOEFL score is 600 or above before entering the program.

Yes. Students who need to take ELI courses must earn a B or better in each ELI course.

If this occurs, University of Hawaii regulations do not permit that student to graduate.

Shidler faculty members are diverse in their training and skills. The teaching styles reflect this diversity. Some classes will be predominantly lecture and discussion; some will be very case-focused. Some will involve experiential learning. Some will have all of these. Regardless of the teaching style, the faculty are experienced and committed to your learning. The faculty brings real-world experience to the classroom both through their own knowledge but also through the students.

The University of Hawaii, and thus the Shidler College, uses a standard United States 4.0 grading system (A, B, C, D, or F), including plus and minus grades. In graduate work, a student must maintain a B or better grade-point average in order to continue with the program and to graduate.A grade lower than a C- for core and capstone courses must be retaken at the student’s expense.

Students may not miss more than 12 hours (6 for a 1.5-credit hour course) classroom time in any Executive MBA-Vietnam course and receive a grade higher than a “C” for that course regardless of their work on course assignments. Any student who misses more than 16 hours (8 for a 1.5-credit hour class) of classroom time in any Executive MBA-Vietnam course will not be allowed to receive credit for the course.

Students may miss only one core course and continue in the program, taking all other core courses and electives. However, the missed core course must be made up as follows:

1. By taking the course in the next Executive MBA-Vietnam cohort;
2. By taking the same course in the other Vietnam location. Both Faculty Directors must approve and the request must be made in advance.
3. In both cases, there may be a financial charge for taking the make-up course. The amount of the charge will vary depending on the course proposed. The UH Shidler College of Business Executive Education Center will determine the appropriate charge for the make-up courses.
